Flavor Profile

The 2023 Dry Szamorodni from Breitenbach Winery was made entirely from botrytised grapes grown in the Lapis vineyard in Bodrogkeresztúr. The wine is a blend of 85% Furmint and 15% Hárslevelű, reflecting both the character of the vineyard and the classic varietal profile of the Tokaj wine region.

Fermentation started spontaneously with the help of native yeasts. The wine was aged in oak barrels for one year, partly under flor — a natural layer of yeast that forms on the surface of the wine during maturation.

Flor protects the wine from excessive oxidation while allowing a slow, controlled oxidative aging process. This results in complex aromas and flavours, including delicate notes of walnut, almond, fresh bread crust and subtle salinity, adding depth and a distinctive character to the Szamorodni style.

On the nose, the wine reveals notes of honey and fresh flowers. The palate is driven by the fruitiness of quince, pear and peach, complemented by elegant nutty tones. Fine yeasty notes bring a subtle bread crust character, leading to a creamy, lingering finish.

PRODUCER INFORMATION

Producer: Breitenbach Winery

Located in Bodrogkisfalud, Breitenbach Winery farms 5.6 hectares of vineyards, focusing on Tokaj’s traditional grape varieties: Furmint and Hárslevelű. The estate’s philosophy centers on natural authenticity and a pure expression of terroir: their wines are crafted with minimal intervention, using hand harvesting and processing, and exclusively spontaneous fermentation. The use of sulfur and bentonite is kept to the absolute bare minimum. Aging takes place in second- and third-fill 225- to 300-liter oak barrels, ensuring that the pure character of the vineyards and varieties takes center stage over heavy oak influence.
