Flavor Profile

Essencia is one of the rarest and most exceptional categories of Tokaj winemaking: an extraordinarily concentrated nectar that slowly flows from botrytised grapes under their own weight, produced only in outstanding vintages and in extremely limited quantities.

The 2013 Aszú Essencia from Breitenbach Winery was made from carefully selected grapes sourced from two iconic vineyards of the Tokaj wine region: the Szerelmi and Lapis vineyards in Bodrogkeresztúr. The natural concentration of the aszú berries is exceptional in itself — from 500 kg of hand-selected botrytised berries, only 30 litres of pure Essencia were obtained.

Crafted with minimal intervention and spontaneous fermentation, the wine preserves the unique character of its terroir. It was aged for 12 years in 10-litre glass demijohns, allowing for an extraordinarily slow and refined development of aromas and texture.

With an outstanding residual sugar content of 470 g/l, the wine delivers remarkable concentration and a silky texture, beautifully balanced by Tokaj’s vibrant acidity. Notes of honey, candied fruits, dried apricot, orange peel and delicate spices create a deeply expressive and unforgettable profile.

Only 120 bottles of 0.25L were produced, making this Aszú Essencia a true rarity and a highly collectible wine.

PRODUCER INFORMATION

Producer: Breitenbach Winery

Located in Bodrogkisfalud, Breitenbach Winery farms 5.6 hectares of vineyards, focusing on Tokaj’s traditional grape varieties: Furmint and Hárslevelű. The estate’s philosophy centers on natural authenticity and a pure expression of terroir: their wines are crafted with minimal intervention, using hand harvesting and processing, and exclusively spontaneous fermentation. The use of sulfur and bentonite is kept to the absolute bare minimum. Aging takes place in second- and third-fill 225- to 300-liter oak barrels, ensuring that the pure character of the vineyards and varieties takes center stage over heavy oak influence.
