Flavor Profile

Matic’s 2025 Frankovka is a perfect example of what a naturally-produced Blaufränkisch can be. The grapes were carefully hand-harvested and underwent spontaneous fermentation, and was bottled unfiltered. Thanks to stainless steel aging, this Blaufränkisch is vibrant and energetic.

Its aroma and flavor are dominated by fresh blackberries. On the finish, a hint of cinnamon and subtle black pepper notes emerge. The rich palate is beautifully balanced by lively acidity.

PRODUCER INFORMATION

Producer: Matic Wines

Matic Winery is located in the Podravje wine-growing region, in the rolling hills of Štajerska (Styria), not far from Maribor. Matija Žerjav, known to many simply as Matic, is a young and passionate winemaker who manages the 8-hectare family estate with a fresh perspective while remaining deeply rooted in tradition.

Matic harvests all his grapes by hand and follows biodynamic farming principles. In the cellar, he relies on natural yeasts and spontaneous fermentation, with only minimal amounts of sulfur used when necessary. Most of his wines are matured in stainless steel, helping to preserve the lively acidity and freshness characteristic of Štajerska.

He is particularly proud of Šipon, the region’s most important grape variety, also known as Furmint. It is the basis of his distinctive sparkling wine, Mea Pet Nat. At the same time, Matic is not afraid to explore more traditional and experimental techniques, including extended skin maceration and maturation in clay and concrete vessels.

His approach is simple: work with his hands, follow his instincts, and let the vineyards speak. With a strong connection to both tradition and experimentation, Matic’s wines offer an exciting glimpse into the future of Štajerska.
