Flavor Profile

Maeijer & Leemans is a natural micro-winery located in Hosszúhetény, in the Pécs wine region. Their Bordeaux-style blend is crafted from the traditional combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc and fermented spontaneously, without intervention, before being aged in amphora.

The nose and palate of the 2024 vintage are defined by ripe yet structured fruit, with notes of plum, blackcurrant, raspberry, and black cherry. These are complemented by subtle herbal and refined graphite notes, adding elegance and layered complexity to the wine.

PRODUCER INFORMATION

Producer: Maeijer & Leemans

Maeijer & Leemans winery was founded by Dutch-born Jürgen Maeijer and Belgian ceramist Pieter Leemans. Jürgen had been visiting the Pécs area regularly since the 1980s and gradually developed a deep connection to its landscape. Today, the winery’s cellar is located in Jürgen’s home near the Basilica in the heart of Pécs, while their vineyards are situated in Hosszúhetény.

Maeijer & Leemans take a distinctive approach to winemaking: their wines ferment in stainless steel tanks before maturing in locally made amphorae crafted by Pieter himself. All of their wines ferment spontaneously, with Kékfrankos, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot among their principal varieties.

Their current range also includes a Welschriesling sourced from Csopak, which is currently their sole white wine. With further releases in the pipeline, however, their white-wine portfolio is one to keep an eye on.
